GREMOUTH ITEMS.

(From Our Sneclal Oorresoonflent.) ■A musical melange in aid of the funds of the-Trinity. Church choir, was given in the. Town Hall, Greymouth, on October. 26, 27, and 28.' The patronage, was disappointing, and the performance itself somew'hat amateurish. The redeeming feature was the finished singing and'acting of Mrs. M f Quceh, who has never been heard to.better advantage since she cam'o to Greymouth., Her solos were "The.Gay Gitana," and, "The Gipsy Bride." The .vocal contributions of Mrs. Parkinson and Mr. Croft-were also deservedly well re-, ceived. The sale to Messrs. W.'.M'Kay'and Son, of Hokirika and Greymouth, of Messrs. Thomas and M'Beath's drapciy emporium situated on Maiyhe'ra Quay, Greymouth, lias just been effected through Messrs. Nancarrow and. Co., commission agents. The business was founded in 1565, and has ever sinco been one of tho principal soft goodp houses on the West Coast. The price paid is reported to be in tho neighbourhood 'of .126,000, and the sale constitutes one of tho largest transactions of the kind that have taken place on this side of the range for years. The late proprietors contemplate jping on the laud. A largo number of persons who have occasion to travel ' frequently between Christchurch and tho "West Coast have'petitioned tho Public Works Department .to widen-the foot bridge over: the Otira River in order that .the coaches may be able to cross by it when the river is.in flood. .The decking of the bridge is only sft. lOin. wide, and, therefore, Only motor-cars. and gigs are able to pass, and whenever the Otira River is in flood coaches and other wide vehicles are delayed sometimes for a couple of days. It .is,suggested,'that the width of the bridge should bo increased by some 18 inches, and the coht of this alteration is estimated at from .£3OO to iMOO.
