(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) . Palmerston, October 31.. At tho Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. Thomson, S.JI.,' a Chinese named \Vah Quia, pleaded guilty to a charge of opium smoking, and was fined 205., and costs. William Tie, another Chinese, in whose house Wah Quin was discovered smoking by Detectives Qnirke and Sweeney, was fined .£l2 on charges of having opium in his possession, smoking opium himself, »and allowing opium to be smoked in his house. Thomas Halsall, for disobeying a maintenance order, to contribute towards tho support of his wife, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. Ernest Alfred Doreen, a youth, nleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a saddle and bridle, valued at .EG, from P. Hanlon, of Ashhurst, and was remanded to the Supreme Court at .Wellington for sentence. The Inspector of Awards' sued Alfred Soifcrt at tho Magistrate's Court to-day for a breach of the Flaxmills Award in employing two men at under award rates. For tho defence it was sought to- be shown that the men were contractors, but the. magistrate said that this was altogether too much of a casual affair. In the case of one man, a conviction without fine was recorded, and, in the other, a fine of £2 was imposed.
