THEIR VISIT HERE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' CKristohurch, October 51. ' Tiro young American botanists havß come to New Zealand to make special:investigations into scientific questions here. Dr. L. Cockayne, of Christohuxch, has been informed of their visit, by Professor E. A. Jeffrey, of Harvard, an eminent botanist, who has recently obtained a great deal o£ information regarding tho | development. and . relationship of New Zealand pines to fossil pines in th« early geological periods in other countries. He has now sent out these two botanists (Messrs. Sinnott and Eanies), who are students at Harvard. They will study living pines from every standpoint, but will study specially New Zealand fossil plants (notably pines and ferns) from the anatomy of the stems. Professor Jeffrey recently discovered, methods by which it is possible to examine fossils from lignite that could not be investigated previously. The visitors at present are in the Waipoua kauri forest, in the North of Auckland district. They intend to, remain in Now Zealand for some months examining the collections in museums and fossils in the coalfields. In Canterbury they will spend some time at the llount Potts beds in the Rangitata district. ,
