ELECTION OF BISHOP OF AUCKLAND.

Sir,—ln your issue of to-day appears the account , of the. proceedings followed by' tho above diocese in the selection of a bishop. From tho accounts', it. seems a very unbusinesslike procedure. It seems to me it is "iv waste of time. I think it would Ke proferable if any. one nominating one for tho.position would have that person's consent to allow his name to bo put forth. If: this had:been done in tho case of tho candidate that was ultimately elected, 'it . would liavo saved; a lot of trouble, trnd perhaps'- if- this man had had some time to make up his'mind ho might, have seen his way to accept the position. Communicating by cablo is liable' to take a man unawares. The method I' havo' suggested would, savo a jot of time, and perhaps save the: diocese from selecting a bishop by exhaustion of some of the representatives. From what I have seen of tho canons governing thoso matters, I think there is some need for Tevision, as it is just possible there may not be an election, and there should bo some tribunal to refer to in case of a deadlock. For instance, in the Scottish Episcopal Church, -when, a certain time "/lapses the selection is done by the

Episcopal Synod (that is the bishops), and they generally chooso a man that was not beforo tho Diocesan Synod. I think such a provision could bo followed with advantage in 'New Zealand. I also wish to, point out that tho reference to St. Mary's, Redclilfe; giving fivo bishops recently to tho Church is rather misleading. It was stated that tho Primus; (not Primate) of Scotland was formerly Rector of St. Mary's. True, but lie was elcctcd Bishop of Brechin, and then 'when the Primus-ship becamo vacant by tho death of Dr. Wilkinson, ho was elected Primus by his brother bishops. In regard to tho Bishop of Glasgow, ho was also Rector of St. Mary's. . Then he was chosen Provost of Perth Cathedral, and afterwards he. was elected Bishop of Glasgow—l am, etc., : " . TIIOS. M. MILLIGAN. October 27, 1910.
