Commencement of Competitions,

A good start was made with the interclub competitions last- Saturday _ aiter'noon on the asphalt courts. Owing to the heavy rain in the morning it was found necessary to postpone the matches that were to have been decided on tho grass courts at Day's liay. These matches will be played at the end of the first rounds. Many of the matches were late in starting, and this-has been noted-by the Match Committee, which has ruled' that all matches must be started, at ; 1.45 in town, and at 2.15 in the suburbs and at Day's Bay. If a team be not ready to start within fifteen minutes, alter which time it will lose two rubbers, subject under the rules to appeal to the Management Committee. Comments on Play. The majority of last Saturday's matches, resulted in easy' victories, for the winning\ teams. Hutt made its debut in senior tenuis, and, although defeated, made a good stand against the Wellington first team. Cornell, in defeating Wilson in two sets, secured the only rubber to Hutt credit. This, player has greatly improved, and may be expected to put up a good record before the season ends. The Brown v. Hawkins match was a hard-fought one, being between two players of totally different styles of tennis, and the more brilliant just won a threeset match by 1G games tc 15. Green was altogether out of form, and failed badly against M'Nicol. , : . In the Brougham Hill v. Victoria College match, Hunter (Brougham Hill) and Wilson (Victoria College) showed best form. The former scored an easy win against Beere. .1 ■ 11. V. Howe just finished a winner in his single against Wilson, the third set finishing G—s in his favour. The best of the B grade .matches was between Trinity Church and Victoria College first. The former team won—rubbers being even—by 8 sets to 6, 65; games to 63. . :• ■ ■ < "■ Jncobsen. of the Trinity Church team, is a strong man for fourth 'place. In fact, the order of merit seems to be.reversed in this team. Crewes was absent, and he joins tho team it will be a stronger one than it is at present. Petone's defeat of Hutt was not unexpected. Parkinson and Duncan were in good form, and defeated Mirajns and Callender in their singles. Parkinson was troubled in the first set by Miram's ohop and out strokes, and lost the set at 5—6, but in the succeeding sets ho took command. ,

Brougham Hill scored, an easy victory against Victoria College second team. Leary, aud Loughnan. show promise of improving their positions in the college team. . ' ■ \ ' _ ."N'o matches, were played in ,the C grade, and only ono was decided in tlx© 1) grade. Johnsonville has a. strong team in , for this grade, and had no. difficulty in winning, against. Victoria College second. ' . .. Ladies' Games. In the ladies' competition , two A grade matches were played. Wellington first defeated tho same club's second easily. The Brougham Hill ladies were just too strong for the Victoria College representatives, and only lost one rubber. M'iss Van Staveren was the strength of the Victoria Col-, lege team, and defeated Miss Morgan in a" good two set match. The Victoria College B team is strong ono, and had littlo difficulty in defeating the Trinity Church by six sets to nil: In this match tho players mado a mistake, and played tho best of seventeen games instead of tho best of thirteen games as required by the conditions. ' The Petone ladies scored a good win in' their match against the Brougham Hill first team. Mies D. .Caverhill played a good game, and quite justified her position as second lady in tho Petone team. Miss Walters is another player who is showing muoh improvement in her play. Misses Kothsclnld and Williams, for tho losors, won tlieir singles. ■' Of the C grado matches tho only onf> that was well contested was that between Khandallah and Johnsonville, in which tho former team won by 5 sets to 1. Mrs, Bowler secured >the set for tho losers, j

Alteration to Scoring Rule. j Judging by the'scores of somo of t)io matches last Saturday, it would appear ns if somo of tho toams are unaware/of tlio conditions of tho competitions. It is tho duty of club secretaries to instruct their team captains on these conditions. Perhaps a few words' here might bo of value. All sets aro to bo played as follows:—

In the men's A and B grades an 4 in tho ladies' A grade all matohes to bo the best two out of three straight sets. /

In the men's C and D grades all matches to bo the besc_ out of seventeen games straight, which means that the player who scores nine games first wins the sat, f

In the ladies' B and C grades all matches to be the best out of thirteen games straight, which means that the player who scores seven games first wins the set. New Year Tournament. The Palmerston North Club intends holding its annual tournament during the New Year holidays. Jlr. J. T. Pickctt has been persuaded to accept offico 'as honorary secretary to the club for another year. The clul) is fortunate in being able to sccuro the services of such an energetic and capable officer. With last year's experience there is 110 doubt that it will be. a success.
