It is quite evident that the Oommon- N wealth will' this. year contribute very largely to the British bntter market. The shipments from July 1 to about October 19 show a great expansion over the figures for the corresponding period of last year, as will be. seen by tho following:— . 1 1908. 1909. 1910. v ■ Tons. Weddel and Co. stato that there has been a distinctly better feeling in the marltct for all descriptions, of frozen meat, particularly for mutton- and lamb, for, although the trade at Smithflcld continues quiet anil the conDumption of lamb has fallen ou-consider-ably, buyers are operating freely in view of the very light quantities to revive during tho next two months. Prime Canterbury ' lambs have been Belling freely at s}d. per lb. for the under 361b. grades, sd. per lb. for 36-421b., and 48d. pur lb for the 42-50!b. weights. Southland lambs havo also been in request at Jd. per lb. under, those quotations. It has. however, boon possible to - obtain slightly higher prices ex ship for any parcels afloat, or just arriving, than the prices ruling at Smithficld for the above-mentioned reasons. Mutton is also mooting with a strong inquiry,' and prices are again a shade firmer. ■ Prime Canterbury sheep, under 64!b., are ouoted at 4d. to 4Jd. per .■1b.,.-ffind.,oyer..64lb, -at ~3Jdv , .t0,, 3id.^j)er. r Jh^

This latter price is obtained merely on account of the shortage in sheep of thia weight' (about 68!b.), which arc required for contract purposes. Good auality North Island sheep are niakins from 33d. to U. per Ib. .and secondary descriptiono 38d. to 33d. per lb. Ewes are firm at-3d. per lb. Elver Plate sheep are also a shade dearer at 3gd. to 3id. per lb. for light and medium weights, and 35d. per lb. for the heavier carcasses. Australian sheep reahso 3d. to 3Jd. per lb. for the wetnors, iv-llils for owes there-is a good inquiry at 3d. per Ib. Although supplies of chillca beef have boon exceptionally hoavy and prices consequently on the low sidc-3fd to Id. for hinds, ami 2Jd. to 2id..£or fores— thero is a decidedly better fce'.'ng ruling for frozen beef, and at the time of writniK buyers are eagerly inquiring for parcels at the prices ruling last week, x<, is, however, impossible, to buy any except at Id. per lb. advance. Australian frozen hmde are cuoted at 33d. per lb and fores at 2*d. per lb., while for New Zealand a-nd River Plate beef it is possible to obtain a fraction above theso quotations.
