Blenheim people; aro. very sanguinp' about their chance in at -least one ,race of the big C.J.O..tloublo, and that is tho Stejfards' Handicap, in which'- Glcnspring. ,'Will represent the. Ecsults of classical events in New Zealand this season have; so far; proved oasy : to pick. In Australia the reverse has ibeen tho case, and some very heavy 6dds-on propositions have been defeated.. The A.J.C. Derby was won by a rank outsider, and Alawa, who was . a hot favourite in tho Caulfield Stakes and also in tho Octobor Stakes, was beaten in both races.
C. Emerson, who rode Outlander to victory in the Great-Autumn Handicap last Eastor, will have tho mount on.Mr. Grigg's horse in tho New Zealand Cup.
B. Deeloy, the Auckland jockey, arrived home from Sydney on Sunday last, and in an interview with an Auckland "Star" reporter ho gave some of his impressions: —Taken on the wholo (he said) tho handicap horses werobetter .than those racing in the Dominion, but their weight-for-age horses wore no better than ours. The three-year-olds wore fair, the A.J.C. Derby winner, Tanami, being a real good sort. Blairgour, Mho lms been boomed as a champion, was very fast for three or four furlongs, but w.is a sour brute, and curled Up quickly. The Phoebus Apollo golding Annapolis, who earned such a reputation in the West, was eufforing from influenza, and Wds not seen at. his best. Master Soult, who only arrived at Caulfleld at midnight bofore the firsl; day'e racing, was unable to bo Started ■ in ■ the Caulfield Stakes, but was produced on the second day, and won tho Eclipse Stakes. His victory was not gained so easily as most people thought, and Olivaster had him hard at it, and it was only in tho Inst half fnrlong that lie got tho best of it. In tho Caulfield Cup, he wns.lamo after doing his preliminary, and although ho got a good run, ho never had the dash to tako advantaee of several openings.
Under the circumstances, he ran well, and was only about six lengths away from the winner, Flavinius, who had to fight throughout tho race, after being one of tho last to leave the mark, aiicl any opening ho got ho had to make himself, ra his win was a most'meritorious one. Britain, who finished third, also ran ;i good race, nml his trainer, the ex-Aucklandcr, P. Nolan, is confident of his putting up 11 good performance .in. tho Melbourne Cup. In tho race won by Advantage, ridden 'by B, Dceloy, tho New Zealand-mare had a lucky run on the rails at tho finish, and lauded tho stake by half a head, there only being a neck between the first four. Eefcrring to tho jockeys he saw on the other side, Deeley gavo it as his opinion' that W. H. Smith was the best, but Hickey, Foulsham, and Jl'Lachlan were'all good riders.
