Tho Maori was replenishing her bunkers at Port Chalmers on Monday, and signed on. her crew on Tuesday. - The veseol left tho southern port last night to resume the ferry service . fram Lyttelton .this evening., She should bo la . uort to-morrow morning, and is 'expected to sail again for Lyttelton at 8 p.in.—that is, if her new turbine runs as smoothly "as anticipated, ;,. ■■' RECORD STEAMING.' The 'turbine, steamer' Loongana has just accomplished a record trio from Melbourne to Launceston mid return. Inclusive of a- stay of two hours and a half in the ■Tastnanian port before, leaving for Melbourne, the turbine liner' accomplished the round trip—wharf to wharf—iu 3a hours, her average speed across the straits being about 19J knots per hour.. As the Loongana was ;handicapped by tho prevailing ttdc3 both' going un and', coming down the Tamar River, this fine performance is especially creditable. THE WAREIEOO ARRIVES;; At a late hour last night (11.40. p.m.) tho Union Oo.'s Warrimoo arrived in port from Sydney direct.- The vessel left tho New South Wales port at 2 p.m. on Saturday last, and * passed Stephen's Island at 6.4(1 p.nv. yesterday. She should havo shown up at Wellington yesterday .forenoon, but lias probably been delayed by bad weather ill tho Tasmaii Sol. The Warrimoo will bo inspected by the Port Health Officer (Dr. Pollen) about 1 a.m. this morning, nnd it is probnblc that k)io will berth at tho Queen's Wharf. No. 1 north, about an 'hour and a half later. , -THE DISABLED STRATnCLYDE.. . 'An inspection, of tho disabled steamer Strathclyde, which recently put into Lyttelton while on a voyage from Ncwcastlo to South America, shows that tho rudder post, which is of solid steel, uinc and a half inches thick, snapped about a foot above tho plate. The engineers bound tho post by two iron couplings, drawn together by bolts three inches and a half thick, but this device eventually proved fruitless. Tho steamer again refused to answer' her helm, and, taking advantage of a lull,' tho engineers made a further pcaTcti and found that the rudder had snapped under tho couplings. It is now thought that the ruddor post was first to go, and during the time repairs were being effected the sea smashed the rudder. On Monday tho crow were taking matters leisurely, and have been greatly benefited by their two nights' sleon. The bunker coal is being taken out of the fore hatch, and tho deck, which was strewn with hawsers, and bent iron, is being, cleared up. The future movements of tho steamer nro uncertain, the captain ■waiting orders from the ownors.
