UNIFORM BURNINGS.

QUESTION IN THE HOUSE.'".'-' In the House of Representatives' recently Mr. Jennings, 51.P. for Taumarunui, asked the Prime Minister whether he would consider the advisability ■of amending the Police Offences Act in this direction: That it shall not be an offence if damage is dono when settlers in any district by a majority decide on having a uniform date for burning off portions of their bush.
Mr. Jennings pointed'out that it. is an offence., under the Act if a settler or settlers decide on a burn and damage is dene to any adjoining holding, and tho owner can institute Court proceedings; If a date, be fixed by a majority of settlors for a general burning in any locality, there, .should be a statutory inir munity from damages and penalties. At present many necessary improvements are stopped owing to the present law."The request has been noted, and will Teccive careful consideration," was the official reply given in the House yesterday.
