Three Masterton pupils were anibng the inmates of the Maori Girls' College at Hukirere, which was . destroyed by' fire on Friday morning.. They escaped in their night-clothes. >.:" The Knox Literary and Musical Association brought a very successful session to a. close with a-pianoforte recital in; Knox Hall oh-Friday "evening. -Mr. G. 11. Ralph, of Eketahuna, rendered, a programme of Beethoven's compositions; which was very much appreciated. The. Rev.- Bain M'Donald, who presided, expressed-the thanks of the association to Mr. Ralph for his kindness in coming such a long distance to provide an entertainment. Mr. James Cochrane, who is leaving Masterton, for Te Kuiti on Monday, was presented, last' evening' by_ ,-a number of residents with a- travellingbag and rug. The ' presentation was made by his. Worship the .'Mayor (Mr. J. M. Coradine),. who referred, to '■ the keen interest Mr. Cochrane had always taken 'in sporting and other matters, and the very general regret -which was felt at.his departure. ' The members of the local Foresters' Lodge of sixteen- years' standing, arid over entertained the younger members' at a smoke concert last evening.. '"Miss Gillespie,. has resigned her position as secretary of the Masterton, Ladies'- Swimming'-. Club,;. arid Miss O'Leary has': been appointed • to fill the vacaaicy. ■'. Dr. Frengleyl.of the Health Department,: ;was ■■ in Masterton ; yesterday, and .'made a thorough inspection of the sanitary, arrangements at the local hospital. . As a result of his visit he has made certain recommendations, which, if'given, effect to, are expected to place the- -sanitation .at the hospital in a satisfactory condition. ■ Two lads appeared before.Mr; L.".6.< Reid, S.M., in 1 the .Juvenile Court' yes-' terday, one being charged -with being unlawfully in possession of firearms, to wit, a'-pea-rifle, and the 'other 'with, supplying ammunition' to a, boy under sixteen years of age.-'■ Both lads were severely cautioned and 'discharged. -.-'_. -.'
