: THE NEW MAIL SERVICE. ;? ißy TeleEripn.—Special Correspondent) ; ' Auckland, October 22.', At • 12.30 p ,m. to-day the .Union Com-pany's-steamer Aorangi, which is : iiiK augurating . the new mail service. ; to San Francisco, via Rarotonga: and Papeete, moved off from the Queen Street Wharf, and set out on her long journey of nearly 6000 miles across the.Pacific: Shortly before the advertised hour; of sailing his Worship tho Mayor (Mr.iL. J. Bagnall) and representatives of the shipping community made a tour of inspection of the Aorangi, at the invitation of the-local manager,of the com-, pany (Mr. A. B. J.. Irvine), and at an impromptu gathering in the saloon the Mayor proposed success to' the ship, the s Uuion Company, and the local manager,referring briefly 'to tho,,fact that ' the ■Aorangi was , re-opening the trade between ..New Zealand and San Francisco, and wishing the new service every success. Mr. Irvine and Captain Evans suitably' replied. There were several hundred people on the. wharf to witness the vessel's departure. , ; In "view of the fact, that the service was hastily arranged, the passenger and cargo bookings are regarded" as a good beginning. The vessel took thirty-iive passengers - from New Zealand, and thfc cargo consists chiefly of numerous trial, shipments to San Francisco, including 438 carcasses of mutton, SO boxes of butter, and a quantity of bacon from .Wellington, and 165 boxes of butter, 47 sacks of fungus, aiid 67 cases of kauri gum from Auckland.' From both Auckland and Wellington tho vessel took large quantities of general cargo for the islands,' such as tinned meats, groceries, stores, etc. The total shipments from I Auckland by the steamer, amounted to jSO tons, inado up 'as follow:—Rarotonga,. 30 tons; Papeete, 20 tons; San Francisco, 22 tons.
