. .: TOO- MILES,, WITHOUT A BTTDDER.: • When outwafd>bound from" Pngct Sound to Yokohama recently, ' the Blue Funnel Line's big.steamer Ning'Chow, commanded by Captain H. L. Allen, carried. away her rudder post, when: '700 'miles from . the Japanese port., The rudder - post,' a; heavy casting of. several'.',tons...weight,' snapped during a gale, and Captain, Allen, resorted, to. the twin-screws to. steer, going ahead with one propeller and astern .with the other engine at short intervals, to keep the big liner on her course. Upon arrival .at Yokohama it was found that the;shipyards were unable to effect the necessary repairs, and, after a delay of flvo days; Chief Engineer Beid and his second, Mr. Anderson, devised a scheme by* which' a jury steering gear was rigged. A big piece of steel V was'.' fastened.... to the- rudder-head, bored at cither aide, and to this two longstout beams were made fast, projecting over the stern of the -vessel: with, pulleys at the end. ; Lines shackled to the. steel fitted to the rudder-head were run to the pulleys at the end of the projecting beams,' and then through tho pulleys to the steering gear, the vessel then being steered from the bridge.- This make-shift steering gear broke, twice during heavy .weather, and steering by.means of the engines .had again to be resorted to until the engineers had effected repairs. This olovcr feat by the ship's company .was the subject of congratulations from tho : head office of the , company, ,the r captain, and chief engineer receiving a bonus.. 'A new forging was made .in London, and the snapped post replaced. :"'•■■'."■'•.:.■ ..-.- •
