THE CANADIAN COSTUME.
"LOCAL SWIMMERS' OBJECT. The decision of the City Council to adopt the "Canadian" costume for use at the various seaside resorts has caused dissatisfaction among local swimmers. ' With a view of obtaining information regarding' the . bathing . costumes in general use on the beaches at Sydney, the secretary of a local swimming club addressed a letter to the 1 ' secretary of the Manly Surf Club (Sydney). A reply, has since been received, and in it the writer states that the regulations in Sydney .provide for a neck-to-knee costume, without any restriction _as _to make or shape. "The great objection to the Canadian costume," the letter continues, ."is, of--course, its. weight, and for that reason none of. the good swimmers will wear it. Another objection is that when a wave, hits the wearer, or when he (or; she) is 'shooting the breakers,' the upper portion of the garment works up around the heck. A very good test for the costume is said to be to weigh it before entering the water and again when coming out. It will be found that it retains a large amount of the water. The costume, however, is very suitable for ladies." ,
This letter was read at a recent meeting of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club, and it was unanimously decided that a deputation should wait on the City Council next week to urge a. reconsideration of the previous l decision.
