TWELFTH ANNUAL REPORT.
■ A report, of'.'.the. Swifts Swimming Club, -to be. presented -at .'the''annualmeeting next .Friday; states" that the club, membership roll- how shows a: total or. 158.,-members-,■'■ inclusive-of .'32 lady members. Greater encouragement was given to ;the ladies' branch of the club ..during the past; season than' was previously the case, an enthusiastic committee being appointed to. control races held by the branch. This committee •is'.'deserving." of thanks" for its . efforts to popularise swimming amongst the ladies,..each, of its four members .(Misses;'Moves,- Murrell,,, Smith, ■ <and Wilton) having, worked hard for the club's interests. ■»' In. championship' events the. .club ' was again worthily represented by Bi C. Freyberg;, who was successful in : winning 'the 100 yds. New Zealand Championship at the meeting held.at Auckland'in February, and also swam a : good third-in the' 220 yds. event.''.' He also 'won .the .•' Wellington Centre's f 100 yds. championship—which was decided at .the Swifts Annual the record time of 64sec. This excellent performance,however, was not recognised officially, owing to the .co.urse.being nine : inches short.;' After ■a .tenure f three years as. water polo .champions, .the, club's, team had the honour wrested from it by a,team representing : Thorndon Club. ' The annual carnival, which -V was ■'. held 'at Te Aro Baths, was quite up to the standard attained of past years,.and drew a good attendance of the public. In.keeping with its policy of fostering! long-distance swimming, the club again held a, race over >; course ,of ona mile,, the placegetters being.K. Russell, W. Morpeth; and S.- MurrelL Over 60 members entered' for the series of races '.for possession of the Smith Cup,- the winner eventually turning up in E.' Levy. An exhibition of - life-saving and resuscitation was given by a team of. members in con junction with a moonlight carnival 'organised..,by the .Tramway Band, at Lyall Bay,'/on the evenings of January 26 and 27.-. 1 The. display was well carried out on, each 'occasion, and, "being the first, practical illustration of proper life-saving .'methods yet given, in Wellington, was highly appreciated by the spectators, Twenty-one events.' were decided' during ; the'.season, drawing a total of 397 entries, and trophies to the value of £37 os. 6d. were- .distributed amongst 37 winners. At tie close of the season,, Mr. Charles Moore, who has'heldthe'positibns of vice-cap-tairi and "delegate', to the Wellington' Centre for. a liumber'of years past left for England.; Before his departure,he was entertained; by the members of'the club, and presented; by them with a handsome travelling "rug, in appreciation of his services. Mr. E.' S. Forne was- appointed to fill ,the position of delegate; rendered vacant through Mr. Moore's departure, while the vacancy on the committee was filled by Mr. E. E. Jenkinson. The season was closed with an enjoyable smoke concert, ;at which orders for trophies won during the season were presented.-by Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, one of the vice-presidents of jtho club. The thanks of the club are duo to Messrs. C. P. Skerrott, K.C., Martin Chapman, K.C.,"J." G.'.W. Aitken j J. A. Tripe, and J'. P. Maxwell, for donations to the funds of the club; to Mr. ..W.'.Skogg for a trophy donated; to Mr. and Mrs. Wilton for assistance during the season; to Mr. ,E. J. Fleming for his services as hon. starter, and to tho press'..
