London, October 6. , Prank Wootton, 'the Australian jockey, rode three' consecutive winners at the Leicester meeting..- .; : ' ; . ; : NOTES AND COMMENTS. \ \ [By'. GLEKCosiI :,,',.' '; After the ! victory of- Tribulation ..in, the Hawke's Bay Guineas, the question naturally- arises:. How would Danube have fared had he been' a 'starter? Looking: at it strictly on;book form, it. .would appear that--Danube' would .again- have beaten Tribulation,:;even; with his penalty of 51b., but those who saw the race are agreed that. Tribulation was fully a stone better.horse on Thursday than, he' was _a week- ago. Looking- at, it from- a time point of view, it seems that (to put it mildly) Danube "would have had:to go faster than ho did'at Wangamii. Against this, however, it must be remembered that the. Hastings track has never been faster than at present.' Judgment on .the two colts must therefore be V suspended until they meet again, which will probably be in the Champion Plate at:Trentham. on Saturday _ week.

Mr. J. Buckley's colt, St. Petersburg, which , unsuccessfully contested the Hastings' Stakes, was sent home to Porirua yesterday. It'- was originally intended that : : ho should accompany Pierene direct to Trentham,; but, owing to soreness, his trainer has* decided to keep him ilear the salt water for some time yet. Pierene has not left Hastings yet, as she was knocked up by her hard race, and H. Gray, who is in chargo of her, is giving hor'timo to settle down again before putting her on the train..

Acceptances for the first day's events at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, closo on Tuesday next. The Otaki Maori Racing Club's Spring Mooting is to be held on ; the new courso on Wednesday and Thursday' next.

Though it is some time before weights for the Stewards' Handicap are due, a section of the public is already plumping 'strongly for Provocation, and Mr. Bidwill's horse is certain to sco a very short price. ' To give an idea of the condition of the champion it may be mentioned that, on Wednesday~~morning, lie defeated Tribulation by fully fifty yards in a gallop over six furlongs on the Hastings track.

The Australian Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded at Randwick to-' day, when the principal event to ho

decided is the Randwick Plato. At Melbourne the Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting will open to-day, when tho Caulficld Uuineas, Caulfield Stakes, and Toorak Handicap will bo run.

.Mr. W. E. Bidwill's horses, Tribulation and Provocation, are being railed from Hastings to Trentham to-day, and will bo worked thcro until it is time for thorn to be shipped south for the C.J.O. meeting. The fates havo dealt rather unkindly with the Hastings trainer Jas. Munn latoly, 'and'he has lost two good jumping horses in tho space of five- weeks. Yaldhurst, a promising steeplechaser, broke his neok while schooling prior to the Marton meeting, and, on Thursday,Pikopo fell, and broke his leg. It is interesting to note that the latter horse always exhibited a peculiar aversion to the fence which caused his death. It is situated at the bottom of the straight on the Hastings course, and the San Fran gelding has .only been sent at it four times, yet, strange to relate, oneach occasion fie has made a bad jump.'at it. The end came on Thursday, when he took off too far, and got into his fence, with the result stated.

Mr. J. Buckley, the well-known Oamaru sportsman, arrived in- Wellington by -the- Napier express- last night. He, will remain here .over the Otaki meeting next week, but will be-unable ■to, be-present to see his'colt rum "at Trontham, as the North Otago Jockey Club, of which he is president, is holding a meeting.on tho same day.

The well-known hurdle horseman, E. Murtagh;- is' suffering from a severe injury received while schooling a horse at Bulls last week, and, at present,' he is confined to bed at Hastings.

Centaur, Tribulation, and Bliss were double winners at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting. ■ ■■'"-.'.■■ ,

_ Merry Frank and Grand Jewel; who both _ won races at the Marlborough meeting, were bred at the Waikanne stud. Owing to slight accidents they ,were_ riot-submitted at the ordinary yearling: sale, and Mr. (Duncan afterwards exchanged them for the brood mare Petticoat. '•..•"' ' ■•■".:• ; :

: Respect," who .won the. Gimcrack Stakes, at Randwick on Wednesday, is an own sister to Multifid'. Respect was In New Zealand until two 'montns ago, when she left for Sydney along with J.. Lowe's team. '■";•'-. \

As Achilles won more money in stakes .on the 'New Zealand turf than any other/-horse, that ever raced in ~ the Dominion, more than ordinary interest centres in his career at the Btud. That he, raced for six Beasons without having his courage or ' constitution impaired/ combined with the fact that he finished up with a clean sot. of legs,'gave rise to the opinion that his success at the •stud was. assvuied.' The'.first of liis stock was the Bluewatbr filly, now called. Pierene, ,- who : won the Hastings Stakes in such handsome fashion on Wednesday. As far as one can gather, Pierene is the: only Achilles youngster in training in the Dominion at the present ] time. Her ,forav suggests' that stock of Achilles are endowed with courage .and. staying'power, and that they are likely to all raco early. .The Dhvette colt by Achilles, now.in. Melbourne, has been called Neoptoleirius; He. was going : very well in'• his >.work;' and was bemg prepared for the Debutant Stakes, to bo run at.Cauhidd:tliis week, but,a recent; letter, from bourne stated that \ Neoptolem'ns "was cast -in his • box one ; night j '; and ,may', perhaps, be unable-to start at either, the Caulfield ■', or Fleniington spring meetings. , .
