His Excellency the Governor returned to town yesterday evening. He will be present at the sports carnival to be held in the mteiest of the Boys' Institute at Athletic Park \ this afternoon. In the evening he will open the pewly-equjpped physics laboratory at Victoria College.
Dr. Martin, who has been for a short holiday in the country, returned on Thursday seriously in/lisposed.
Tho Rev. Frank C. Lang, M.A„ of Feilding, leaves for India at the end of the mouth to toko up missionary work. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lang, of Wellington, have also decided to enter the mission field, and are/to leave for Hyderabad (India) ,by the Otway in December. Dr. who recently delivered a series of addresses in Wellington, and the Rev. and Mrs. Takle leave Dunedin on October 16 on their return to India.
Mr., R. 1 B. Morris, who, for tho past months, has filled the position of Acting-Cbief-Postmaster at Wel'ington, was yesterday, on his retirement from the office to take up his' ordinary duties as Inspector of Savings Banks, tho recipient of a handsome pair of binoculars from tho staff, as an evidence of their regard for him. Mr. Gannaway, the Assistant-Postmaster, made tho presentation in the presence of nearly the whole staff.
Mr. Joe Harris, the lay evangelist, who is at present taking an active part in connection with the Anglican N6eneral Mission in Wellington, js (says the "Layman") "a, good speaker, and a man in the highest meaning of the word, as is proved by tho fact that he holds the Royal Humane Society's medal and clasp for saving life. Forming ono of the rescue party to go down a burning mine, he had, in the end, to bo rescued himself, and was brought up for .dead."
Mr. C. A. Griffiths, the well-known fruit and produce merchant, arrived back from a trip to the Islands by the Mokoia yesterday morning.
Mr. G. H. Fell, who has spent nearly ,ten years in tho office of Messrs, Bell, Bully, Bell, and Myers, has opened an office on his own account in Dalgoty's new/'buildings, Featherston Street.
Mr. A. W. Ingles, formerly a lieutenant in tho Rbyal Navy, who seryed in the Crimea and China Wars, died at Kaikoura on Thursday night. He had long been prominent in local affairs in the district. —Press Association.
Mr. A. S. Adams, of Dunedin, is in town.
, The late Gunner Wm. John Day, of No. 1 Company, Wellington Garrison Artillery (Wellington Navals), was interred at Karori Cemetery j-esterday, the deceased being accorded a military funeral by his late corps. The coffin, draped with the Union Jack, was borne on a gun-carriage, and preceded by tho Wellington Garrison Band. The firinc party was in charge of Captain \Y. H. Morton, officer commanding the corps. The deoeasod volunteer; gunner was an enthusiastic member of his corps, and vory highly esteemed. Ho was twelvo years in the corps, and a prominent member of the Navals' cutter orew. Tho cause of death was pneumonia.
Mr." Nils Baker, ■'of Gothenberg, Sweden, is at present engaged on a tour of • the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Stoddart, of Willoughby, England, are also touring tho Dominion.
Mr. A. E. Mabin, of Levin nnd Company's staff, who is at present abroad, is duo back from England on November 7.
