WRITING COMPETITIONS.

; Messrs." H. I. Jones and Son, of Wanganui (examiners on behalf, of the "Egmont ,Pen" competitions), report: -I have examined -the specimens of writing entered for. competition in the various standards. Ttte writing in the • lower standards is generally in advance of that in the higher' standards,, the weakest standard, being Standard V. The writing of , the winner in Standard VI is, however, excellent,- and. iar superior to that next in order of merit, ''lie result -will 1 show either that the teaching of writing is a 1 gift peculiar»to certain :teachers or that certain - teachers give far more attention to writing than, others. . Certainly the' teacher of Maraetaha School, Muriwai,. Gisborne, should be very gratified at the success of the pupils of that school, ■; and, evidently; the teacher there gives great .attention to. a subject which, tu-day, -is much neglected. There is an individuality; about the writing in this school'that is, not shown,: in so marked a' degree, throughout all standards; in any other school-. Good writing is shown in' other schools; but no ■ school has the 6ame even,-good work throughout as ithe Maraetaha School. With few. exceptions, the writing from the various schools was disappointing,; and; to my mind, shows distinct deterioration from; the standard of. primary sohool writing some years ago. Certainly there is. iar more attention given to writing in: the Poverty Bay district -than in any other represented in tihi3 . competition, the entries from almost every school in that district showing evidence'.-of;: attention on . the- part ofv'tha teacher. Results: Standard I— First:, Kohu-. Moke -Moke, Maraetaha .School, 'Miitiwai,; Gisborne. , Second: Ada •Weatherall, Queen's Park School, Wanganui, Standard ll—First; Huauri Pohatu, -Maraetaha, Gisborne.; • Second: Dorothy ■ Davey, Queen's -Park "School, Wanghhui. Standard lll—First: /Teddy Baker; Maraetaha School,. Muriwai, Gisborne. Second:' 'Maria Baker;.' ,'Maraetaha School; Muriwai,. Gisborne. ; Standard IV—First: Kahakaha Pohatu, : Maraetaha School, Muriwai, Gisborne., ; Second: Ereti to ITau, - Mareataha, School,' Muriwai, Gisborne. Standard V—First: James Morice,. Gisborne. 'District School, ;; Gisborne. second:, Harold Bull, District,' . School,, Gisborne.Standard:. Vl—First' Ellen Rimitiriu, Maraetaha School, Muriwai; Gisborne. Second: , Eileen Percival, ■Queen's. Park School, . Wanganui. .... . .I ' might remark in conclusion - 'that there is a wide difference in the ages of. tho pupils., in the several, standards;' and. this results, in. the. yoiinger ■ children being placed. at a disadvantage ill the competition. : -. •; , - - Yours truly, , (Signed) W. COREY.
