SOME DANGERS OF MISSIONS. "You'd better take to whisky; it would do you less harm." This surprising remark by Bishop Julius almost : took away the jreath of tho great con.- " gregation which listened to his striking address in St. Pnnl's Anglican proCathedral last night. He was speaking of the dangers of missions—of people he had known in England who ran' about from one mission to' another, .and who ' seemed to take quite a. pleasure in hearing the missioner as he spoke of the sins and shortcomings to which they were specially prone. The Bishop considered this sort of: religious: ment was worse than dram drinking, and he added: "You'd better take to whisky, it -would do,you, less harm." Sjjme people, he remarked " in '.effect, • went; tovmissions,. and said they weroi bo interesting,, so nio&V but . in-answer to the questions: "Are they making a new man of you ? Is your life being v> changed ?"■ they: answered:: "Oh, ho. They make no difference 'in my daily life, but.they are so nice." Yes, said ■ the Bishop, that may' be, but' missions attended In ' that spirit: will "play tho'. very devil' with you." Some of these people who rah from mission to mission, and enjoyed having their sins laid bare as an interesting "sensation,"'-. got into such a condition that ';their-hearts-were: fit: for nothing:else than .. to ba cracked up for road metal." The Bishop also told the .story of. a lady who was quite indignant on 1 learning during a mission that she had ,to listen to the . j same Gospel as was preached to her footman. Dr. .Jnlius concludcd ;by , assuriris; the congregation that he did'; | not wish to discourage them as regards hthe present mission; Par from it.
