j. ; A FINE THAT WAS NOT PAID. ■'■■■ An illustration of. how, the.arm of the law may grasp an offender after a considerable lapse of time was found in an occurrence on board'the Sydney steamer yesterday. In January last. a book-' maker named George Shotlander -was fined £15 for betting": with infants (three'- young- Maori girls) •oh .the Tauherinikau racecourse oh New' Year's Day. Some little time elapsed, the fine was not paid, and Shotlander's whereabouts was not - very, apparent.'. Yesterday Detective Cassells happened to • go aboard the Maitai when she arrived in the 6tream from Sydney, and one of the passengers who came under his notice was George Shotlander. ■ The detective arrested the man, and lodged him in the 'Terrace Gaol ■ to:.; serve the default, sen.tence of one-month's 'imprisonment. >-.■• ■>
