THE OREPUKI SHALE-FIELD.
CAN IT' BE SUCCESSFULLY / WORKEDr : Among the .' matters dealt witli by Dr. Bell, - Government- Geologist,' ;in his ■ annual report, .is-the .Orepuki shale-field. '■ Dr. .Bell says thatmuch of-the yaluablo - plant > at tho shalu works ut .Orepuki is 'still in good repair. /The' plant waSsaid. ; to havo' been closed'-'down some years ago —(1) Because of the'removal -by tho Gov,eminent' of the duty on -kerosene,■ paraffin;, etc. .(2) Because of tho expense of mining the shale'. -/Before'commencing-.tho'.wbrfc; it had .-been-'estimated that the 1 shale would cost. 9s.'-lid.-.per, ton lo mine; but, ■instead, .it is said to have cost no less -than 18s. per ton. (3) Beoause the supply, of 'shale 1 was'found'; 1 , to be 60 small that it 'would have been soon oxhaustocL had the works been kept open. - ,'He thinks, the in- regard to • mining might have been overcome there boon jinrsued a' longwall method, starting 'at the boundary and working -backward towards the. incline shaft, and, abandoning tho : ground behind.V -' . In the course-of further remarks,. Br, Bell, states that the supply; of shale in tho small basin near'-thV works is 1 un-doubtedly-limited.-, It seems probable,' sinco thoro is an outorop tlu-co miles distant.from tho entrance of the, small basin, that the shale bed is continuous beneath, the larger basin as well. If-this''is tho case, there'is.a goodly suiiply available, though it .is another, question; as to whether it could.be: profitably'mined and treated, in view: of .the ; economic 1 conditions at present existing in the Dominion.'' ' . ■:■ The'waitresses at a Liverpool cafe recently- suddenly - abandoned their work in' the 'midst of the luncheon hour, when hundreds, of customers were clamouring for their services.'; The girls made a stampede for the room whero their jackets liung, and, began to troop off into the street. The management hurriedly intercepted tho loaders of the girls, anil after a. parley .induced them to return to their duties. The reason of the strike was, it appears, a proposal of the management to increase the working, hours of the girls. THE. CAUSE OF CONSTIPATION. ' The most comnion'cause of constipation' is a lack of exercise necessary to keep the muscles of the bowels active. That is why constipation is often, brought on by too frequent use of purgatives. They act violently,, performing the work of tho' bowels for them, and so weaken them that they will not act without assistance. Chamberlain's Tablets will euro constipation, because, instead, of doing the work of tho bowels,, they gently stimulate them to voluntary action. Their frequent use. will not injure the most, delicate jmon,—Adyt, -
