The Yosemite Valley is situated in California, U.S., on the. west • slope of the Sierra Nevada. The valley is .nearly level, about G miles long, from half a mile to one mile wide, almost a mile below the general level of the surrounding region,' and enclosed within almost perpendicular granite walls, 3000 to 6000 feet in height.' An. Act of Congress in . 1864 granted the Yosemite Valley to the/State of California for public use and recreation for all. time. On the, north of the valley tile Yosemite Creek makes a'vertical fall of 1500 ft., then a series of cascades and a final leap of 100 ft. The elevation of the valley is about 1000 ft. .
