Presisident of the Journalists' Institute, presided at a banquet in connection with the. Journalists' Conference. There was an' attendance of three hundred and fifty, ' included in ' the 'number being Lord Strathcona (High Commissioner for Canada), Sir Gilbert Parker, M.P., Sir W. Hall-Jones (High Commissioner for New Zealand), and many Australasian, Canadian, and British' journalists. The High Commissioner for Australia, Sir George. Reid, in proposing the toast of the: evening, ■ declared that the Australian' press' was worthy of the highest .traditions of the British press. He humorously suggested that the time was coming "when, every newspaper: would, strive to present both sides of every question for the public- good. He wondered when this mighty; press would condescend' to devote half a column daily to the great .mass of' the i rising' generation, l ' in order h lead-.youth along l the noble paths of the ■ Breatfuture ; awaiting, them.
