A certain amount of criticism was directed by members of the House yesterday against Section G of the Education Act Amendment Bill, which proposed to remove tho disqualification placed on candidates for school committees convicted of certain offences if the candidate had ; received a free pardon , or had undergone tho punishment to which they had been adjudged. llr. G. W. Russell said there was an anomaly at the present-time, as men who were eligible for election to education hoards, .the. House' .of . Representatives, and to he called to the Legislative Council, were not eligible' for election to school committees. Ht> knew nt two cases in which exceedingly able men had been disqualified under the present Act - on account oi their previous life. One of these men had been for years oh a committee, and had done good work, but his personal: enemies brought up a previous ; slip against him, and he was ruled out. • The Minister said candidates for school committees would be : placed, ■> by his amendment,, on.the same basis as candidates for education boards.- ■■■• Tho clause was adopted. , .1
