CAPTAIN SCOTT'S PONIES.
ON QUAIL ISLAND.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Ghristchurch, September 14. The Siberian 1 ponies and dogs, which are to be used by Captain Scottfe Antarctic expedition, : arrived in Eyttolton by the Maori this morning, having been transhipped from the Moana. at Wellington. Hie animols were in charge of Mr. C. H. Meares and . Lieutenant W. M. Bruce, R.N.R., who had with' them one attendant for the dogs and, two grooms. On arrival at the port, tlie'-animals were transferred to a lighter and taken over to Quail Island, where they were landed on the jetty, and the horses were released from the boxes in which tliey had been confined for fifty 'days. The ponies were rather shaky on their legs after their long journey, , but enjoyed a good roll. ..They: will be confined to the stockyards'for a few days, and then let out in the fields. The dogs . are occupying kennels at the quarantine station. Mr. Meares will spend some time . at the' island, and will have ehargo of the animals generally, but the attendant and grooms-'will resido on the island for the time being.
