Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., who had boon conducting a commission of inquiry at .Christchurch into allegations against the Sydenham and Addington Working Men's Club, ■ returned, to Wellington on Sunday, and presided at yesterday's sittings of the Magistrate's. Court. .

The death is reported of Mr. George Hayden, ■ one of the pioneer settlers of the Marlborough Sounds, at the age of 95. Mr. Hayden was born in Hampshire,'but left England for Canada, with his parents at an early age. He arrived in ■ Auckland in . 18SG, and after several removals settled down at Havelock in 1871.'

Prior to • leaving for the ' south ' last evening the Timaru Savages presented Mr. James Dykes, secretary of the Wellington Savage Club, with a silver mug, for his first-born, and Mr. E. T. Robertson, of the Wellington Club, with a silver cigarette-case, in recognition of .the manner in which ho had'put himself out to entertain them in Wellington.

Mr. H. G. ICerslakc, sub-editor of the PalmcTston North "Evoning Standard," has resigned his position, and intends leaving for a trip to Australia,. the United Kingdom, and- other countries. Mr. Kerslake is a popular journalist, and on many occasions has acted in editorial .capacity. In hockey circles ho will bo much) missed in the Manawatu, where ho lias been for years one of the leading enthusiasts in fostering and building up the sport.

Mr. W. Pryor,. secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, left last evening for Christchurch. He will represent his federation at' the hearing of the Canterbury shearers' dispute, which opens .before the Conciliation Commissioners at Christchurch- to-day, and will be continued at Dunedin on September IG.
