GLEANINGS FROM PARLIAMENT. Members of Parliament must: feel very envious of those fortunate individuals who are able; to roam about in the spring sunshine outside at their own sweet'untrammelled will. To sit in that heated, heavy 'atmosphere and discuss railways, State sugar-works, tho Land Settlement .Finance Amendment Bill, and others equally'laborious; when all tho world is calling, one -outside, must require immense ueli-obUtoration. However, they .-must "dreo ■their weird" like everybody else, and mako the best of things.-: Matters of considerable importance, have made their appearance in Parliament,; and at times have galvanised members into a considerable state of activity and heat. : The Sugar Beet Bill was a subject over which' a great deal was, said on Tuesday afternoon,. hardly of a cordial and agreeable nature, for members appear to view it with distrust. In tho evening the Native Townships Bill was discussed in Committee, and.'; almost from the very beginning of' the subject started off;..into■' a .freehold-leasehold debate, lasting till.'well on, into the evening, or rather,: tho'early .hours, of the morning. ;"-.'".', : ' ■ .'• Oiij Wednesday 'afternoon tho . lonj-,-; looked forward 'to Land 'Bill was read a first time in the' House. It appears, to have/had. such ah effect upon members that at 'tho-/'.present time, most of thorn do not wish 'to give/expression to their opinions /upon., the'-, matter; neither ' freeholders : nor. leaseholders. The course of tho Bill will be a moat in-teresting-'one tb follow 'when.it conies to be debated, later on.- ';.'. - . ...Besides the Land Bill, various, other:' mattors of importance were 'dealt with. A Loan'; Bill.for £1,750,000 for public works was-brought down, also, a now Bill, entitled the Commercial;- Trusts Bill was.introduced., A matter .in which a: considerable' amount of interest, was taken was the' Oamaru Harbour Board Bill; one of 'the 1 few .'private' Bills; thathad; : survived in, the .-; severe strugglo for 'existence.
