MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, August 30. The weather .continues bitterly cold, and there have been falls of snow-ok To, Rangitumau and • other hills in the district. It is feared that, unless the weather speedily breaks, mortality amongst the lambs will prove serious. Masterton possesses a very conscientious farmer.. At a recent dairy sale he bid ,£3 for a cow, and ran himself up in halfcrown bids. to £3 10s., rather than buy the beast at a- price which he considered less tlian its value. Influenza amongst horses is very prevalent in Masterton just now. Many teams have been temporarily laid up in consequence. The Wairarapa ladies' hockey team left this morning for Nelson to compete in the tournament which begins there on Wednesday. Mrs. Humphries, of Greytown, chaperones the team, and Mr. Rupert Hatch, of' Masterton is acting as manager. . A Home buyer is reported to be negotiating for the purchase of the output of pigs in the Wairarapa this season. The chairman of the Masterton- Fire Board, the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, and the captain of the Fire Police will probably proceed to Palinerston North on Wednesday to take part in the ceremony of opening the new fire brigade station in tliat town. • The annual . Home Mission meeting of the Masterton Methodist Church will be held this evening, when an address will be delivered by the Rev. Thomas Fee. The Mayor of Masterton (Mr... J. 11. Gcorgo Allen was charged on remand in tho Magistrate's Court this morning with the theft of a sack of oats of the' value of 10si, the property of Robert Johnston. After hearing evidence, tho Justices fined accused JCS and costs.
