LILIES AND CLOVER.
A pretty exchange of compliments between the German Empress and an old fishermnn's widow is reported from a little . place on ■ the- Pomeranian coast. The Kaiserin was passing the widow's hut when sh« noticcd somo fine Madonna lilies growing in the little garden, and stopped to admire them. The old wcthan, hobbling out of her cottage, pluckcd -nil the flowers, tied them in a bundle, and presented them to her Majesty. ' Delighted, with this gift, the Empress walked into the. hut, and inquired of the widow's family. One of her sons, she soon learnt,• was dead, the other whs in the gold 'mines of Australia. "I am glad," added tho woman, "for your Majesty to have the. flowers. Lilies are for happiness, and unsuitable for a widow." 'Die Kaiserin then gayo the old woman a little four-leayed clover, saying; "I give, you in exchange this four-leaded ■ clover that I hiive just found. I hope it will bring you luck," and will bring your son to you."
