The New : Zealand Chess r Association liekl a special meeting on Monday evening nt tiio King's Chambers. ,lie-dele-gates present :were:~Messrs. B. J3. Alien (Auckland Clicss Club ami boiith Wellington Chess Club), P. btill. (Auckland Chess Club), S. Miokay (Mastetou.C e s Club), J. A. Connell (Rangitikei Che s Club),.l'. K. Kellmgton (Auckland oiking. Jlcn's Club and/J'iraaru), A. G. l-elj '(Canterbury' Chess Club, \VcUinBW« Chess Club, and' Waiigauui Chess C üb), W.' B. Mason, (Oamaru Choss Uyb), ' Messrs. E. J. Barnes and (Otago Chess Club), and J.. G. - rym'nle (Wellington Working fllen s Club). Jlr. R: B. Allen was voted to the chair. The business consisted of the consideration of the motions relating to the annual championship tourney.. lhe ( motions staiivling in the name of .the Auckland, Chest Cmb, were taken first and discussed .seriatim,' with the lollowuig -ie,SU No. 1, providing that the giving of money prizes be discontinued,, and that in' lieu thereof trophies suitably inscribed be awarded, was lost, tho voting being ; as follows:—For," 14; against, 28.-', ' No " 2,' "That - a club 'nominating . a competitor'should 'bc-bound-,to deiray lus travelling expenses." .This irtotion, whicli was .understood, to Have lor its object the weeding out of players not up to uesiieu standard, was lbst oil 'the voices! ■ ■ i No. 3, VThnt the sitting be limited to six days! and that, if the number of entries should not admit of the tpurnameiK being completed within that pcrioc., the tournament should be ployed in sections." It was generally considered that the object was a good one, but that the method proposed was faulty.','An amendment to defer consideration was lost,-and the'motion was ultimately, rejected by 29 tC> No.' 4,' "That the'association should devote 'five pounds towards 'the entertainment of competitors; tho remainder (it anv) of the cost of such entertainment, to'be'borne by the local clubs where tho tournament is held." This was rejected by 34 votes to 8. ; \ , ;,The., motion 'standing- in,.-_Mr.-> Barnes s name was amendod-to'read.: "J.luu.as the cost of 'tho anual, congress- is. becoming a 'heavy tax on the centre, undertaking the. same,'- it is desirable that-.expenses for entertainment of competitors should he reduced to a minimum. • lhis-was carried bj J 31 ..votes to 11. •The proposal of Mr. H. L. Jiynes, viz.: "That the games of the next champitm-' ship tournament be printed," was carried unanimously.: The delegates learnt with regret that Jlr. James was at present on the.sick list, and passed a motion of sympathy sincerely, wishing him a speedy le°°The vacancy ,in the local Adjudication Board caused by the death of Mr. A. I. Littlejobn was filled by the appointment of Mr. John Mason, the prasent chara-. pion of New Zealand. Welliiigton s quota to the association's board therefore consists of Messrs. \V. E. Mason, R. -J.
