NEW ZEALAND'S SHARE. LETTER FROM SIR JOSEPH WARD. Isj Woffraph—Prow Association—CopyrisM. (Reo. August 30, 11.10 p.m.) Melbourne, August 30. Mr. Batchelor, Minister for External Affairs, has received a letter from Sir Joseph Ward with regard to the radiotelegraph conference held at Melbourne last year. Sir Joseph Ward says the New Zealand Government views the proposals with much interest, and is desirous of promoting them. It is proposed to ask for funds for stations in New Zealand, and also for a grant towards New Zealand's proportionate share of one-sixth of the Fiji station. Wireless communication is considered by the Government to be especially important in facilitating the movements of the Navy, as well as of the mercantile marine. The letter mentions that tenders have been called in New Zealand, with a view to ascertaining the cost if establishing a station. '■ . The conference in December last drew up a scheme for the establishment of the following stations:— _ 1. At Sydney, with radips of 1250 miles —to communicate. with Doubtless Bay, New Zealand. ■ • 2. At Doubtless Bay, with radius of 1250 miles—to communicate with Fiji and Sydney. . 3. At Fiji, with •radius of 1000 miles— to communioato with Ocean Island and Doubtless' Bay. , 4. At Ocean- Island, with radius of 1000 miles—to communicate with Fiji. The cost of the four-stations, which is estimated at .£42,000, was to be apportioned as follows:— ■ £ Imperial Government 23,334 New Zeajand Government ...... 2,333 . . Government of Fiji 3,500 Commonwealth' Government ... 12,833 Total 42j000
