AUSTRALIAN LAND TAX.
FINANCIAL PAPER APPROVES. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright. London, August 29. The financial paper the "Money Market Review" says that that part of the Australian Labour party's programme regarding . the bursting up of big estates has a particularly ugly sound in Great Britain. Unlike Mr. Lloyd George's scheme, however, the Australian proposal is ' intended not to strike at', a class, but to benefit the country. British investors. must gain, if settlers are planted, through the increased value of the remainder of their estates. The Bill, adds tho paper, is experimental, but deserves success.
AN AMENDMENT MOVED. (Rec. August 31, 1.5 a.m.) Melbourne, August 30, In the debate on tho Land Tax Bill in the House of Representatives to-day Mr. Deakin, Leader of tho Opposition, moved an .amendment to the effect that the land tax would have an unjust incidence, and would be an abuse of tho Federal power. He contended that the tax was unconstitutional, as it trenched on State rights.
