Marx) for ,£IOOO. damages' in respect of action 'of tho club in warning him off. Tho plaintiff ,asked for reinstate■ment and .£3OOO damages. The action of the Jockey Club in warning plaintiff off was the result'of the running of the mare Merry Widow, who ran at Turffonteia (Johannesburg) at the races of the Johannesburg Turf .'Club, was unplaced in a fiverfurlong race on March 20 last, and won a race over five furlongs and a half on March 28. ' The case aroused considerable interest iu South Africa. Judgment was given for defondant with costs, At a meeting of the Jockey Club (England), held at Newmarket on July 13, Mr. Rothschild said there was a matter which' he had mentioned to the stewards, and which they had kindly given him permission to bring before the notice of the olub. . During the very interesting discussion that had taken place upon the repeal of the first paragraph of Rule 52, ho understood that it was the wish of the club that there should be more weight-for-age races, and that.those weight-for-age races should be better patronised. It seemed to him that it might be advisable, in ' order to secure this object, that ■ a suggestion bo made to the various clerks of courses that , in future in handicaps above the value of SOO sovs. there should be no penalty for the winner of a w-eight-for-ago race, saj of the value of 300 sovs. He thought that might induce owners to run their horses in weight-for-age races after the weights had appeared. The stewards decided to give the suggestion a trial at some of tho meetings at Newmarket, and if it proved successful other meetings would probably follow the example. ' ■
