'A ' ' ._.._ , ' DEATH OF' A PIONEER IN SCIENTI- •■ ~ FIC RESEARCH. After a prolonged ••period 'of intense suffering-.from the inroads of X-ray dermatitis, a. disease contracted as a. result of pioneer working with X-rays, Mr. H.' W. Cox, of Gray's Inn Road, London, died recently. Mr. Cox was an inventor and a leading manufacturer of! X-rays apparatus. ■ ■ Mr. Cox'was one of the earliest workers with X-rays, and was accustomed frequently to' expose his hands to their .action. 'During liis research many years ngo ho by accident placed tho .tube of the apparatus close to his face.-'As n, result of these exposures to the rays he contracted the terrible disease to which he lias now fallen a victim. The disease gained upon him with insidious persistence. Some years ago, after, much suffering, he lost one of his lefMiand fingers.' In .February, 1909, he had the larger portion : of his right hand cut away, and in November tho [ whole of his right arm had to he amputated: '' 1 ~■■■■■■ .'•••'■ Mr. Cox had the privilege of giving a demonstration with X-rays before King Edward, when Prince of Wales, nnd as the inroads of disease incapacitated him from attending to his business he was granted a sum of ,£2OO from tho Royal Bounty Fund in April, 1903. At the , funeral service, in the Clapton Wosleyan Church tho Kev. J. AVesloy Hart said that just before his death Mr.' Cox had declared, "I would- gladly go through it all again to achieve what I have been permitted to accomplish in perfecting the X-ray apparatus for. tho benefit of my fellow-men."
