Tho now high-pressure ,turbine for tho Union Company's steamer Maori was discharged from tho Shaw, Savill steamer Kia Ora at Port Chalmers on Monday: The now turbine, which weighs over 23 tons, will be fitted into the Maori when she goes down to Port Chalmers next month to be laid up for a ihorough overhaul and survey. It is anticipated that when the Maori resumes running, the installation of the new turbine will result in an increase in the vessel's speed, and, what- is more important, will effect a considerable economy in steam and consequently in fuel.

WHANGAKEI LIGHTS. The Whangarei Harbour Board has notified the Marine Department that on and after September 1, 1910, the fixed white light on beacon No. 'i of Single Tree Point will bo dispensed with, and a white (lash light, substituted. , Duration of light 1 second, obscured 10 seconde. The light will bo an acetone light, and should be visible, except when obscured by the land, for a distance of about seven miles. It is understood that the sixth Oriont liner, now being constructed at Clydcbank, will be named the Orient, thus perpetuating a. designation which for about 30 years has been well known to travellers between Great Britain and Australia. The Orient Line's first Orient only passed out of active scrvico last autumn, when Bhe was sold to be. broken up. Built in 1879 by Messrs. John Elder, and Co., of Glasgow, this original Oriciit was' an iron fourmasted steamer of 5453 grope tons,, with

engines of 1215 nominal-horse-power. Tho new Orient will bo approximately as largo as, the biggest of tho five 12,000-ton vessels which within the past year or so have been placed in the company's Australian service.
