Mr. J. R. Rutherford, of the. Secondary Department of the Wangauui District High School, ■ who has been appointed headmaster of tho Palmerston So'iith High School, was entertained by the scholars on Thursday afternoon, and was the recipient of several parting gifts' from the pupils, old boys, and stalf. . ■ ■ • Mr. Thos. B. Harding, of Napier, father- of Mr. Coupland Harding, of xlio Wellington "Post" staff died yesterday, aged S7. Deceased was one of the i founders of the temperance movement in' ; the Dominion. He wts a member of tlio first Rechabite Tent established in New Zealand in 1870.—Press Association. Mr. Ayson, junior, of tho Marine Department, is leaving for England by the lonic on September 8 for the purpose of bringing out to New Zealand a large quantity of salmon ova for liberation hi the rivers of- tho South Island. '■ ' Lord Ranfurly, acting , on the suggestion of Captain Goodwyn Archer, has invited Captain R. Scott, the Antarctic explorer, to kindly revisit the Veterans' Home oh his way to Lyttcl-. ton. Captain Scott has replied that he hopes to be able to include the visit in his programme for New Zealand, and to reawaken tho memories of the veterans with whom he jnot in 1904. Mr. W. H. Helmore, of Cbristchurch, is leaving for London by tho lonic on September 8. . ' , ' The Hon. John Rigg, M.L.0., has received a letter from the 'city clerk of Milwaukee, U.S.A., advising him'that. Mr. Walter Thomas Mills, a well-known Labour advocate aud lecturer, is to visit New Zealand during the coming year. Mr. M. A.*Phiiips, of Messrs. Henry W. Peabody and Co., loft last evening by- tho Moeraki on a brief trip to Australia. Mr. Robert Ashton, of the r Presbyterian Church, has been gazetted an officiating minister under tho Marriage Act. Mr. Robert Aitken, one of the oldest pastoral and agricultural settlers of Southland, died ou Mouday last at the advanced age of 83.' Ho was born in Tasmania, "and came to Now Zealand before his marriage, lauding , first with live stock at either Nelson or Marlborough, aud travelled south by the East Coast down to Otago and Southland, where ho settled and farmed prosperously till the end of his days. . Mr. Barrington Waters,* of Fullers* managerial is at present somewhat seriously indisposed, Ho is to undergo an operation for an internal complaint within tho next day •Oγ two.
