MASTERTON NOTES.
(Prom Onr Snecinl Correanondenu Masterton, August 26. .Mr. F. H. Wood, formerly of Masterton, biit now of the Bay of Plenty, in writing to a , friend, gives an interesting description of the South. Sea Islands, wbieb ho has recently visited. Mr. Wood thinks that it is a mistake that tho islanders should havo all their eggs in one basket'and produce copra alone. Tons of oranges and lemons are, ho says, allowed to rot on the ground. When in Tonga ho had an audience with the 'King, who was most hospitable, and placed a vehiclo and servant at his disposal. ' ■ .. • The Ikaroa Native Land Board, which has been sitting hero for the last two days, has adjourned to Hastings. Tho services of a veterinary surgeon are much needed on the East Coast al present. Settlers havo to rely entirely upon an occasional visit from the Department's stock inspecto.. Boach Strev/n with Herrings. '.' The beacK on the East Coast, from Aohonga to Kaiwheta, was last week strewn with herrings, tho fish being gathered by tho basketful. It is thought that the herrings were driven ashore by a shoal of deep-sea fish. A much larger quantity of timber is arriving at the Masterton Railway Station'•'■now than arrived at thu same period-, last year. . ' •' , ■ Mr. Victor Sutton, ; of the Masterton branch of. the Labour Department; has received notice of his transfer to tho head offico at Wellington. Social and Church Events. A very enjoyable function took.place in the Arcadia Rooms this week, when the Misses Briarley (2), who arc leaving for Wellington, were entertained at a , , "social." A very pleasant' evening was spent at cards, charades, songs, and dancing. ' ' . . ■ A progressive ouchre party, in connection with the Foresters':. Lodge, was hold in the Exchange Hall this week, over ono hundred persons being present. A first-class supper was provided. i Tho first annual meeting in connection .with the Church of. EiiglanttaMen's Society was held. this weok, before a' good attendance, of members. The ro port and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The society has now a mem-, bership of twenty-seven men. . ■ -The. quarterly meeting, of. the Stonohenge Lodge of Druids was hold on Thursday' evening, Bro. A. 0. Levien, AiD., presiding. Ono candidate was initiated and two proposed for, membership. Bro. Stockley-Jones was elected V.A.8., and Bro., R. Smith, P.A., was presented with a Grand Lodge diploma. It was decided to play the lire Brigade , at cards on Thursday evening. : N TKe'. annual sale of work in connect tion with the Melanesiau Mission was opened in St.' Matthew's Schoolroom on Friday afternoon, and continued in tho evening; There was a very fino selec-, tion of needlework,: home-made cakos,, etc., to say nothing of a supply of Nor-, folk Island arrowroot. l Various Notes., ' ' A sum of £31 ,was taken,at.a salo of work in aid of the Mission which was held in Mastertou yesterday. ... The second concert of the season in connection with the Mastertoii Orchestral Society was hold in tho Town Hall this evoning. Miss Thclma Petersen, of Oarterton, was the. vocalist,, and her-rendering of "Where Corals Lio" was much appreciated. A 'cello solo, "Reverie," by Mr. 1L Inns, was also a feature of the programme. . The South Wellington Chess Club will play a match with the Masterton Chess Club on September 24.. . .'■' .- . Wool and skin, sales in- connection with Messrs. 'Dalgety and. Co., Levin and Co., and the ■W.i , .G.Ai ) ':Ltd.j--wer6 held in Masterton yesterday, and were attended by a, fair number; of 'buyers. Bidding was fairly; brisk 'throughout.
