MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. B, Haselden, S.M.) ' : A GUEST AND HER HOSTESS. WEEPING FIGURE' IN THE DOCK. . ' Heavily veiled, and attired in a smart blue costume, a young woman named Winnie Kiffiu Thomas, appeared in the clock charged with stealing, on or about August 12, three lady's rings of a total valuo of £U, tho property of Mabol Taylor. She was further . charged with stealing, on or about July 16, one opal brooch, value =E3, the property of.Mabel Taylor. Accused was affected visibly on. 'entering the dock, and was allowed to sit down. She then buried her face in her hands until nothing but a large hat and portion of uu arm were visible to the Court, while her pleas of guilty to both charges were scarcely uudible. i Chief-Detective Broberg, who conducted! the prosecution, stated that accused hud, become-acquainted with Mrs. Taylor, tho| wife of a veterinary surgeon, while staying at the Hotel Arcadia, and a friendship ensued. Mrs. Taylor hud invited; accused to go and stay with thum (tho; Taylors) at Karori, and tho invitation, was accepted. During that time Mrs. Taylor had lent ber guest tho opal, brooch, which was the subject of the; second charge before the Court, but onasking for .its return was.informed by accused that it had ba,en broken. Sub.sequent to the departure of tho guest, Mrs. Taylor discovered that three rings were missing. The ' rings and brooch l had been recovered by Detective Kemp,, w'ho arrested . accused. She. had u husband in -Western Australia, who, she: snid, was practising as a solicitor, but' several "begging". letters found in her possession made it appo.tr as if the husband was "loafing" on his wife. Accused had been suspected of theft before, but nothing ' had been pro red against her. The Magistrate: Has sho any friends? The Chief-Detective: Yes, • she. has friends in Oamaru, your Worship. Her mother- and father reside' there, I believe. The Magistrate: Has any word been sent to her friends? ' The Chief-Detective replied- that nb. word had been sent to Oamaru. The magistrate remanded accused till Monday for sentence, and directed that in the meantime, her friends in Onman should be communicated with if she so desired.
. THREE MEN IN A BOAT. James Scott, Michael Murphy, and Edward Dixon were charged with stowing away on. the collier Ngatoro -during the recent .voyage from Greymouth to Wcllington.\ Each of the accused pleaded guilty.
Sub-Inspector' Norwood stated that the men had been discovered after the vessel had left Greymouth. They had no money and had been handed over to tho polictat Wellington. The fare from Greymouth to Wellington was 305.,
A fine of i£2 was iinposed in each case-, tho default being It days.
■ ■ INSOBRIETY. Mary M'Mahon, on a charge of drunkenness, wns lined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment.. ' ■■, Clara Algar, who had but recently been discharged from the Mount Magdala Home, pleaded guilty to a chargo of 'drunkenness.. Sho was convicted and discharged on'condition that she.signed an application for a prohibition order: One first offending inebriate was' convicted and' discharged, and another was remanded until August 29 for medical treatment.
