CLUB MEETING. ■ The annual general meeting of tho Pctone Defence i Rifle Club was held at tho, Lower Hutt on Wednesday night, thero beiug a very largo atteuuauce of members. ...The annual report and bal-ance-sheet wero adopted.. The election of officers resulted as follows:— : President, Mr. S. V. Burridge; deputypresident, Mr. J. MacLachlan; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. G. A. Chapman, <E. P; Bunuy, L. W. Ludwig, Dr. Purdy, A. Bollinger, AV. H. Ballingor, P. Jenness, C. Hollard, AV. J. Eddie, W. C. James, T. M. AVilford, G. Pearson, D. Virtue, J. T.. Hawthorn, AV. Strand, P. M'Parland, Ji. Barns, and MTinisE; secretary, Mr. AV. J. M'lvride; assistant secretary, Air. B. AV. Bird (re-elected); treasurer, Mr. S. Knight (re-elected); executive committee, officers, ex officio, and Messrs. Caldwell, C. Bird,' H. "&. Aysbn, S. Spencer, and Clout. Messrs. A. Ballinger, AYV.H.: Ballinger, and C. Hollard wero elected life members of the- club.v.. Votes of thanks were accorded donors of. trophies and the retiring officers.
MAIL'CHANGES. , ' '■ Dating from yesterday,, an extra mail will be dispatched from Petone in the evening, to Wellington, closing at, the local Post Office at 7.40. There will also be an extra outward mail at 11.3 a.m. In Jackson Street the boxes will bo cleared at 7 p.m.' in future, in time to, catch tho outward mail, closing at 7.40 p.m. ■•■-.■■ • , ■ • ■...'• COUNCIL VACANCY. Mr. C. P. Broklebanlc has announced his intention. df contesting the seat on the Petone Borough Council, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. Colquhoun. ■SOCIAL GATHERING. The fortnightly "social," under the auspices of the Lower Hutt friendly societies, was held in tho local Oddfellows' Hall last ovening. There was about thirty lodge members present. The first part; of the programme was devoted to progressive euchre (for which an aggregate competition is being held for a challenge shield).. Musical 'items iwero also rendered, and very enjoyable evening was, spent. ' ' GOOD TEMPLARS. The Hope of Potono Lodge- of Good Templars 'held their weekly session in tho It-aiifurly Hall "on Wednesday evening, when Bro. W. Denby, C.T., presided over a large, attendance Bro. Jordon, D.E.S., Bros. Potherick; and A. Oram, and Morris, of the Wellington Lodges, wore visitors. Three' now members were initiated, and several were proposed. Tho visitors wore then officially received, Bro. 'Jordon, D.E.S., taking tho chair. Ho spoke on electoral work, and stated that the party were hopeful of getting their demands through Parliament before long. Items to the programme woro given liv Bro. G. Kyle, Sister G.
