CHURCH UNION IN CANADA.
METHODISTS FAVOURABLE. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright.' ' . Ottawa, August 23. The Canadian Methodists' Union Committee, by 44 votes to 6, expressed itself in favour of union with the Presbyterian and Congregationalists. It is expected that a conference sitting will adopt the view of the committee. ■'■■.'" It is interesting to note, writes Dr. • Fitchett in tho "Southern Cross," that by 184 votes to 73, the Presbyterian General Assembly of Canada has approved of. a basis o£ union with tho Methodist and Congregational Churches of the Dominion.. The Methodist Conference is certain to carry tho proposal for'union 'by a majority as large, l or even larger; and the Congregational Churches m Canada have shown a more practical. and earnest de-, sire for union', than tho Churches of tho same name in Australia. A movement so great, and charged with such vast issues, of. course progresses slowly. The present negotiations have been going on for seven years, and another.seven years may pas's before the union is consummated; for tho whole question must be remitted to tho Presbyteries and Synods of the Churches concerned. But that tho movement for union has reached its present stage is a matter for profound delight. Tho union movement in Canada, which was started by the Presbyterian Church,' originated in' tho difficulties' of providing for the religious needs of fast-increasing immigrants in an immense territory. .
