(From Oar' Special CorrosDondentj J BANDS AMALGAMATE. ■ -Chiefly owing to '- the efforts; of- • the Mayor, of Petone ;(Mr. J. \V. 'M'Ewan) and Lieutenant Herd (conductor of -the Petone'Citizens' Band), the long-hoped-for amalgamation of the Hutt and Petone Citizens' Band and the': Petone Brass Band has at last been definitely decided on. Last evening the matter-was brought to 'a head by the holding of a general meeting of the "Petone Municipal Band." The Mayor (Mr.'J. W. M'Ewan) occupied theichair, and in opening the proceedings stated that, by arrangement, both bands had decided to drop their old names, and that all the properties of the new band would bo vested in the Petono Borough Council. '
Balance-sheets from the old bands, which'were very satisfactory, were, presented, and approved. ■ The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr. T. Sl.' Wilford, M.l'.j president, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan; secretary, Mr. Hutchinson; treasurer, Mr.'Douson. The question of an election of a-con-ductor was held over till January, 1911. Lieutenant Herd, according to agreement, will conduct in tho meantime.
After the meeting a smoke concert was held, to celebrate the amalgamation.
'■,:.' -cantata at; petone. A successful cantata, entitled "A Joyful Thanksgiving," was presented at St. David's Church, Petone, last'evening, by the combined Petone church choirs.. Tho church was crowded, the Rev. H. Thomson presiding. Mr. - Sherwin conducted, and Mr. Eennio presided at the organ. Mr. Sibun led the orchestra. The cantata will be repeated at, , St. Augustine's Church at a later date. :
ANOTHER SKATING RINK Another company has been formed foi the purpose of constructing an up-to-date skating rink on the vacant section' on the corner of Nelson and Jackson Streets, Petone.' The new structure will have u frontage of 80ft. and a depth of 130 ft., and is to bo of superior design. ' i
■ - _''■'. A NEW SCHOOL. The King's Road School, Lower Hull (which is being built to relieve the present congestion at the school in Railway Avenue), is well on tho way to completion. The contractor expects to he out of tho building and to havo it fit for occupation before the spring term holidays ar» over. ; /
PETONE RII'LE CLUB. The report and balance-sheet to be prosented to-night at the annual meeting of the Petone RiQe Club states that the membership of the club is at present fifty-six. Last shooting season was a very, pleasant one from every point ul view. Two aggregates (in addition to the championships) wero competed for by members, the atteadances _ throughout boing large and competition keen. Twenty-one trophies were won outright. Rifleman Edlon. is to be congratulated upon having' won the championship shield. The - Grace trophy was . won by Rifleman Ingram. The club is indebted to the following donors of trophies: Messrs. W. Grace, E, V. Bunny, G. 'A. Chapman, Dr. Purdy, F. Jenness, A. Ballinger, C. Hollard, L. W. Ludwig, W. Eddio, '}. Hornig, J. Turner, C. Bird, S. Spencer, W. liellor, B. Bird, and W. Cook. Comparatively few members competed at the Dominion meeting at Trentham last season, and the committee desire to impress on members the advisability of keeping the next meeting in view. 'The balance sheet shows a credit balance, which, though small, must be regarded as satisfactory. , The surplus ol assets over liabilities is £2'Z 7s. lid.

purpose ot conferring degrees on past offioai's. The board reported six members on the sick fund, and their pay (amounting to £& 10s.) was .passed. . Next lodge evening will be ("Ladies Night, and will also be a pound night. _ lne receipts for the evening totalled .£74 IDs. ■2d.
RECHABITES. The members and friends of the 1.0; held a "social" in the Century Hall, l'etono, last night, to commemorate the seventy-lifth anniversary of the order. There was a large- attendance, including officers and members of the various tents in Wellington and Lower Hutt. Mr. Fathers, district secretary, who occupied the chair, gave an interesting address on the aims itnd objects of tho order. A very interesting programme was given, and supper was served. The following contributed items: Misses Miller, Blakeley, Watkins (2), Mesdames Fuller, Hayward, Jones, Baumgreen, Messrs., Chamberlain, Ackroyd, Denby, Sussex, Gordon, Bradley, Masters • Ackroyd and Francis.' Miss M'lnness was accompanist.
