NOTES AND COMMENTS,

03r UtiNCOK.), '■ Acceptances • for , the first day's events at the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club's: meeting close on Friday next. The Stepniak—Tortulla horse, Diabolo, was yesterday commissioned'all over the Dominion for the New Zealand Cup to be run,'in November. A promising recruit for .' the . hack hurdle ranks is St. Bill, who figures in the Marton and Rangitikei nominations. The Wanganui horse is stated to be a perfect jumper. ..-■.-■ The'"', disappointing Mauser gelding, Moloch, has left W. Davies's- stables and has been sent to Ifasterton, where his owner resides. First Battery and Llanwern are again in commission at Trentham. , ,If Gold Lace is to justify her position in the betting. market for the Epsom Handicap, she will need some racing beforo' the.; big Randwick event is run, as when leaving here she was much on the big side, and'in her past efforts sho has always run better after a few races. The local trainer, A. Goodman, is losing Merry Time, who is to race in the Auckland district in future. It is reported that there is a likelihood of the Martinborough trainer, J. Russell, shortly taking up his residence in the Waikato, at whioh place one of his patrons intends to reside. The owner of Lady Medallist did not fully appreciate the honour conferred on his mare! by the Horowhenua handicapper, who awarded her 9st. 81b. in tho Park Stakes, and.it is not likely that the consistent daughter of St. Alwynno will be taken to Levin. If one excepts Allurement, The Native, and Vibration, they were a very poor lot of hacks seen under silk at the Manawatu Hunt Club's meeting, and it is fairly safe to assert that not half ot them will be winners' this season.' • Ranter, who is trained by T. Lloyd at Crofton, was lucky to win the 'concluding event at Awapuni last week. The hurdle horse can go very fast for a mile, but ho stops quickly alter that. C. O'Neill, who was injured at the Riccarton meeting, is still carrying his injured arm in a sling, but he is ,ablo to superintend'the work of his team at Palmerston North. The Hastings-trained Yaldhurst has been kept up to the collar since tho Hawke's Bay Hunt Club's meeting,' and he is to be given a further chance to

distinguish himself at Marton on September 7 and 8, when he will compete in the Hunters' events. J. O'Connell will ride him.

Owing to F. Tilley's nbsence in Australia, Master Laddo is now an inmate of T. Lloyd's stable. -

, When Himitangi was competing in the unregistered ranks, he was practically invincible, and judging' by his poor form since his disqualification was removed, they.must have been a poor lot of horses that he so frequently defeated at the unregistered fixtures. His best performance in the registered ranks was at the Manawatu Hunt Club's meeting, when he easily won the Ladies' Bracelet, two miles, with 12st. 131b. in the saddle.

The Otaki Maori Racing Club has decided to hold its annual meeting on the, new racecourse on Wednesday and Thursday, October 12 and 13. Mr. 0. J. D'ath has been appointed secretary.

At a meeting of stewards of the Tara-tahi-Carterton Racing ClubJ held on Saturday last, Mr. J; W. Card was appointed honorary judge, Mr. U. Shannon handicapper, Mr. Thos. Cameron starter, and Mr.'H. W. Smith clerk of the course. Messrs. Deller, Wolters, Keid, Skelley and Denbee were appointed a programme committee.

Duke Foote is now a better favourite for the Melbourne Cup than Trafalgar. Ho is a three-year-old., by Sir Foote from Ortelle, and is owned by Mr. J. Baron, owner of Prince Foote.

Festa, the famous brood mare, whose produce includes Salute, Faust, Fabula, Pestino, Fervor, etc., has now. been barren three years in succession. Foaled in 1893, by St. Simon out of L'Abbesse do Jouarre, she is. still, a comparatively -young mare, being only 17 years old; and is therefore two years younger' than was Alice Hawthorn when she produced the Derby winner, Thormauby, and eight years younger than Pocahontas when i hat celebrated mare foaled her last foal, Avaucaria, dam of Eayon d'Or (St. Leger), Chamant (Two Thousand Guineas), Camelia (One Thousand Guineas and Oaks), etc. j .

While being schooled recently on the 'Hastings . tracks the hunter -Yaldhurst fell at the post and rail double and broke his' neck. He was the property of Mr. J. W. White, and gave every promise of being a useful 'chaser. He was by Strowan, from a Sou'-wester mare (half sister to Manutuke), therefore he was nearly a full brother to that good horse Pink-'Un. M'lnnes,' who was schooling him, received a severe shaking.

. In presenting their annual report the committee of the Pahiatna Racing Club regret that, owing to unforseen circumstances they cannot place as good a bal-ance-sheet as usual before members.. The committee, were in the unfortunate position of having to alter the dates for the annual. race meeting, and also': had bad weather for it,.the result being a; marked decrease. in. nominations, and acceptance fees, totalisator and gate receipts, though the fees from the', bookmakers show an increase of JJ7I, and the members' subscriptions, also show an increase of. ££. 11l the face of this the committee have kept down expenses as much as possible, the total expenditure being ,£378 less than last year, after reducing the amount owing on debentures from .£3BO to .£360. Theuse of the club's property has been grantedto the A. and P. Association at a nominal rental, arid permission given them to plough a piece in front of the grandstand at their own cost. The usual course-has been - followed of writing off heavily for depreciation, though the value of the club's property: has been -fully maintained. On the whole (the report says)., the club's position is satisfactory, and with a good race/ meeting next year the committee trust that the club will make good, the ground lost last - season. The farm-account shows a profit on the year's working of .£ll9 18s. 7(1., which is very satisfactory. ■ ' ,
