WILD ATTEMPT TO SEIZE A SHIP.
CAPTAIN SHOT DEAD. ACCOMPLICE' RUSHES' ENGINEROOM. ESCAPE OF THE DESPERADO. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright. (Rec. August 23, 9.50 p.m.) ■ New York, August 23. A daring- outrage was perpetrated on the Alaska Pacific Steamship Company's steamer Buckman, as sho lay oil: the small bar harbour of Eureka, on hex way down the coast to San Francisco. A passenger named Fred Thomas, with an accomplice, had concocted a wild plan to seize the steamer, a vessel of 1820 tons gross, and overawe the crew. Thomas shot and killed the master, Captain E. B. Wood, and his confederate meanwhile endeavoured to seize the en-gine-room. The attempt failed, and the man was overpowered and manacled. Thomas thereupon seized a lifebelt and jumped into the sea. Ho has not been captured.
