THE AMERICAN TANGLE.

A DIPLOMAT' INTERVENES.. By Triegraph—Press Association—Copyright. New York, August 22. Mr. L. C. Griscom, ex-Ambassador from the United States to Japan, is, on behalf of Mr. Roosevelt, proceeding to Beverley .to'confer with President Taft. The visit is described as one of conciliation and enlightenment. Mr. Griscom intends to emphasise the necessity for tho question of National Administration remaining neutral between the New York State factions.. The Republicans' dissension is visibly working in favour of the Democrats in New York and New Jersey.

A DEPLORABLE RESULT. . (Rec. August 23, 11.30 p.m.) New York, August 23. • Mr. Taft, in a letter to Mr. Griscom, refers to the election of Mr. Sherman to the temporary chairmanship of the Now. York Republican Convention, and says he does not suppose there is any doubt that Mr. Roosevelt would prove a satisfactory chairman. ■ He had urged upon Mr. Sherman the necessity of taking Mr. Roosevelt into his fullest confidence, and after the committee's' meeting he informed Mr. Sherman that the result, was deplorable, as a breach, unless repaired, meant the possible defeat of the Republicans.

Mr. Griscom predicts the reversal of tho committeo's action when tho Convention itself assembles, and adds that Mr. Roosevelt will make a speech as temporary chairman, giving the keynote for the Republican campaign.
