"BEATEN VIOLENTLY."
ALLEGED CRUELTY TO HORSES. Persons with that peculiar and undesirable kink of mind which gives then an extraordinary capacity for inflicting cruelty on animals are every now' and then providing unpleasant work for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As some- owners of uncontrollable tempers have their acts brought before the society on more occasions than one, it seems that the only hope of doing, the popular'dumb friend of man a good turn is to prevent such persons having the handling of them. At a meeting of the society, last evening a suburban resident wrote that July 30 he witnessed revolting cruelty- to a three-horse team. The driver beat the animals violently all, over the body, head, ears, nose, and legs with a manuka stick a yard long and an inch in diameter.' It was stated at the meeting that the driver had been convicted of cruelty' to horses four times. One of the animals concerned in a case brought against him had been better, blind and was destroyed. The matter was referred to the society's solicitor. . .
