LOCAL AND GENERAL.

It is probable that the police changes which have been looked forward to for some time past will be announced to-day or to-morrow. •. ■ The lot of the poor man's dog is not always a happy, one. In AVellington recently a dog met with an accident, and had two legs broken. The speediest relief- in such cases is death, but in this instance it was an hour and' a half before the dog was put out of its misery. It was taken away by tho inspector of tho S.P.C.A., who called, at various likely places, but, unfortunately for the suffering dog, found that Death was either out ■or" unwilling to officiate. Eventually, poison from the hand of a kindly chemist obliterated, broken legs and all other aches. The inspector of the S.P.C.A. said at yesterday's meeting that the officers of the Government laboratory ought to bo allowed to assist him in such cases. Mr. AV. R. Haselden,. S.M., wishes us to say-that he did not say or mean that it was improper of creditors to bring up Civil Servants on judgment summonses. AVliat he said was that it was a scandal that Civil Servants should be brought up on such process—the scandal being to the Civil Service, not to the creditor "Fisherman" writes again from Picton os follows:—"I .have to thank you for acknowledging my letter published inl your paper of t,le 15,u instant, headed 'Price of Fish,' and trust it was one of your readers who secured this, week thirty odd dozen garfish for 65." About In u months ago the City- Council stt up a committee, with Councillor M'Lareu as chairman, to consider ways and means of popularising the JCewtown Museum, by arranging for the delivery of lectures to school children and by such other methods as might seem feasible. Nothing has yet been effected by the committee. The delay is in part due to pressure of other business, but largely also to the fact that many of the collections in the museum are as yet in an incomplete state, with large additions in prospect. A Dominion representative was informed yesterday by Councillor M'Larcn that iu addition to a largo number of skins of birds and other specimens, now in the hands of the taxidermist, uiiu.lh.er lot of skins, valued at about .£SOO, is expected to arrive shortly [from ' South Africa. Until these numerous additions have been dealt with, the special committee nieutioniul above can, scarcely proceed with its duties. Large additional cases are being procured, and the work of mounting new specimens is being vigorously pushed ahead. Although the museum is yet comparatively an infant institution, there are already indications that more roomy quarters may have to be provided for it in the future. Coiincillor M'Larcn hopes to call his special committee together in-a week or two from the present date.
