CLOSER UNION.
CONFERENCE OF UNIVERSITIES OF THE EMPIRE. Exporting, as President of the Board of Education, 011 the distribution of the last Treasury grant of ,£IOO,OOO amongst. university, colleges in - Great Britain and the three colleges in AVales, Mr. Runciraan states that the growth of important universities in the British Dominions Beyond tho Seas and in the Empire of India, and' the rapid improvements in the means of communication, have brought new opportunities and new responsibilities to those who are entrusted with the provision of university- education. The necessity for a regular interchange of views and for the better organisation of facilities for advanced study throughout the Empire has led tho universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London to issue invitations to the uni-i versities of tho Empire to a confererico to bo held in tho Metropolis in 1912, and there can be no doubt that this is the first step towards a closer union and sympathy, which cannot but have the most far-reachiug and beneficial effects.
