OPPRESSIVE TAXATION.
Sir, —Your frequent and persistent exposure (in your valuable columns) of the malpractices and maladministration of the Ward : Government deserves the highest admiration, and sincere thanks of every right-mir/ied man and woman iii the Dominion, but I think your splendid "leader" in your issue of August 16, exposing the real bearing of the new death duties on the masses of the hard-working -citizens and settlers, is one of your most splendid efforts to save the people from one of tho cruellest designs of the Government to rob the widows and orphans of the industrious settlers of their'hardearned rights. Sir, I am quite amazed that Mr. Massey has so far made 110 attempt to expose .this abominable attempt. of the Ward Administration to exploit the orphabs and widows in order- to retain their, present position; and now you, sir, have given him a lead, I do hope he will follow it up, and let the people understand to what lengths tho Government are prepared to go in order to retain tho reins of government in their hands. The wonder is.that the Prime Minister is able to get support from so. many members to pass such oppressive legislation, but, of course, if members are prepared to support such transactions as tho Heyes affair and the Dinnio appointment, they will scarcely stick at anything. Apologising for trespassing on your valuablo space, and hoping, that , some ; more able pen than mine will take this matter up',—l am, et-c., . MURRAY I. H. JACKSON. Masterton, August 20, 1910. .
