——•—» ■ ; .-'■' 'It is intended to send a prospecting; party into the Bay of Islands as soon as certain difficulties at present in theway can he overcome. This locality was visited by Dr. Bell (Government Geologist) some time ago, and he recommended that the Department sflould carry on further investigations in connection with somo quartz-bearing- country in the, vicinity of Russell.. Preliminary inquiries woro at once- instituted, by the Department,,with a viewto setting prospectors at- work, and it was then found that the land in question was owned by-the Natives and was exempt from the operations .of miring regulations. Interviewed on 'the sub-, ject -the H611..8. M'lCenzit! , (Minister for Public Works), stated that an attempt was made to acquire part of the land, but. the Natives evidently thought they had the blind.side of the Government, and wan ted the. Minister to buy up the whole, block'of 13,000 acres. 'T am riot at present inclined to name the esact locality in which Dr. Bell believes it will be worth while' prospecting," added the Hon. Mr. M'Kcnzie, "but it is not far from Russell."
