LAND BALLOT.

Ashburton, August 20: A ballot for sections in Ruapuna No. 2 Settlement, thrown open for selection on renewable lease, under the Lauds for Settlement Act, was held in the Oddfellows' Hall this morning. The area ,of. the settlement is 4426.' acres; divided into fourteen sections. The following are.names and addresses of the successful applicants:— Joseph Clifford, Morvin; Colin M'Lennan, West Melton; "William Edward Jones, Kimbell ■; Francis >M'Bride, Sunnyside, Christchurch; Joseph Hemsley Boaler, Goraldino; Robert Aitken M'La-y, Mataura; Ernest Geo. Hayward, Christchurch;, Geo.' Miller, Wa'imate; Geo. Milne, Fornside; Robert Walter Holland, Scargill; Francis Tasker, Tiinarii. There were only • two applicants lor section 6, both of whom were rejected in'examination, while a similar', fate befell the only applicant for section 8, and in section 11 of the three applicants , one was rejected and ■ the other two were disqualified owing to being otherwise successful in a ballot. Fifty applicants went to the ballot, in which considerable interest was taken here.
