The differences appear to- have arisen over the promotion of Engineer Spry to be station officer, with senior status to four other station officers. The superintendent/in a letter to the committee, wrote that when ho appointed S[iry to the position he was confident that he would be able to chitv out its duties, and that he. instructed the dcmitysnperintendent not to require Spry, who is a mechanical expert, to drill the men, but'to lot-him attend the drills so that ho should Fain familiarity with the terms used. The- disputo between the superintendent, and: his deputy arising out of this appointment is said to hayo' reached nn acute stage. The committee's report on the pceition will bo laid before tho council at its next meeting.
